UK Power Networks give Rudolph the night off

Hi, I'm Ian Cooper - Low Carbon Project Manager, also known as Chief Elf!

Our ‘big battery’ at Leighton Buzzard is big enough to charge an average smartphone over 1.2 million times, or give a talk time of approximately 1,800 years - but did you know it can store enough energy to give Rudolf and his reindeer pals the night off on Christmas Eve?

We boffins in the Innovations team have worked out that if Santa swapped his sleigh for a state-of-the-art electric car, our battery at Leighton Buzzard stores enough electricity to power him around the world.

So here’s the science bit: The circumference of the earth is 24,901miles. The latest electric cars have 100kWh batteries and can do 409 miles in optimised conditions. Our big battery is notionally 10MWh, so it’s capable of charging a car one hundred times. That’s enough to send Father Christmas round the world 1.64 times under optimised driving conditions. Now, we’re not expecting a lot of traffic up there on Christmas Eve so he should get a relatively clear run – with plenty of charge left to stop off at a few chimneys on the way round.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “How would we get the car to fly?”

Well, I’m pretty certain that Father Christmas has got the flying bit covered…
