St Ives Badminton Club have been kitted out in matching team tops with a little help from UK Power Networks.

The power company, which delivers electricity to eight million customers across East Anglia, London and the South East through its vast infrastructure of overhead power lines, underground cables and substations, has given the club a much-needed £250 grant as part of its Team Sport Award programme.

The firm donated the money following an application from employee Mark Edwards, a technical services development manager based at the company’s office in Potters Bar. Mark is also chairman of the badminton club.

The badminton club, which has been in existence for 70 years, meets at One Leisure in St Ives, and play in the South Cambridgeshire Badminton League.

Mark said: “We wanted to present a more unified-looking team when we turn up to matches so we’ve used the money to buy matching badminton tops for the 25 men and women who make up the club.

“We think it really helps to promote the team values of the club and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without the money from UK Power Networks.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is designed to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year nearly £10,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
