UK Power Networks Services has won a prestigious Beacon Award for its work upgrading power supplies for London Underground.

Paul Doherty, Stockwell site supervisor for UK Power Networks Services, received the award from George McNulty, Programme Director of Infrastructure, London Underground.

The awards are presented to projects that achieve high standards and demonstrate a proactive safety culture above and beyond normal site requirements.

This award was given for the team’s work on the London Underground Northern Line Extension to Battersea. The design and build contract was awarded to UK Power Networks Services in May 2015 and involves extending the existing 22,000-volt switchboard at Stockwell switchhouse. It will provide four additional panels to supply electricity, plus associated power systems to meet the increase in electrical demand.

The award is recognition for UK Power Networks Services’ underground rail team’s consistent safety record over the sub-surface line projects. The team has accumulated over one million working hours without a lost time incident working on the power traction upgrade programmes for the London Underground rail system in readiness for new, faster and more frequent train services.

Stewart Dawson, director of UK Power Networks Services, said: “We are delighted to have our long-term safety record independently recognised by our client. We operate a consistent standard of site management and do everything we can to keep people safe.

“Maintaining a strong focus on this key area remains a top priority and this award will encourage our teams to remain vigilant and operate our projects to the highest site standards.”
