A Gillingham rugby club is sporting new kit thanks to an award from UK Power Networks.

Chris Everest, an electricity linesman who lives in Chatham, scooped a £250 award for Gillingham Anchorians Rugby Club from his employer in the company’s Team Sport Award.

The squad has put the cash towards new balls, bibs, tackle bags and training kit.

Chris, who is 24, has been playing with the club for six years and plays in the men’s first 15 which is currently mid-table in the London and South East Division.

Chris, who works in Tunbridge Wells, said: “We were really happy about the donation. Like all sports clubs we constantly need money for new training equipment. The players pay subscriptions but nobody is paid, it’s all run by volunteers for the love of the sport, so it’s great to receive sponsorship. Playing rugby keeps me fit and it’s a very enjoyable and sociable sport.”

The team meets every Saturday and Sunday at Darland Avenue, Gillingham. For details about joining the club visit http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/gillinghamanchoriansrfc

UK Power Networks, which delivers electricity supplies in the South East, including Kent, runs the Team Sport Award scheme to encourage staff to volunteer in the community. The scheme also promotes healthy living, teamwork and sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year nearly £13,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
