Deadline extended for apprenticeship opportunities

The deadline is fast approaching to apply for a place on UK Power Networks’ apprenticeship programme, supporting the national smart meter roll-out.

The deadline is fast approaching to apply for a place on UK Power Networks’ apprenticeship programme, supporting the national smart meter roll-out.

The company which delivers power across London, the East and South East, has trained 161 apprentices in the last five years to help fill the industry’s skills gap and 12 jobs are currently available, starting in January, based in Enfield, Hemel Hempstead and Purfleet.

The closing date has been extended to November 14, for these key roles which will help ensure smart meters are smoothly rolled out.

Emma Barbour, a recruitment specialist at UK Power Networks, said: “The trainees can be new to the power distribution industry and we are looking for people with a great attitude who are interested in electronics, electricity and engineering.

“The national roll-out of smart meters by electricity suppliers is set to accelerate over the coming years and UK Power Networks’ trainees will help to ensure the roll-out works as smoothly as possible.”

Apprentices follow a Trailblazer Apprenticeship Framework which includes a qualification in electrical power engineering. After 18 months they will become smart meter specialists. The national smart meter roll-out is being led by the country’s energy suppliers, who people pay their energy bills to. UK Power Networks estimates at least 3% of the 7.6million electricity meters being changed in its regions will require its attendance to resolve technical issues associated with the power supply into customers’ premises.

In July UK Power Networks’ first group of smart metering trainees became the first apprentices anywhere in the country to successfully complete the new Trailblazer apprenticeship. They were presented with their certificates at the House of Commons.

For a chance to follow in their footsteps visit the vacancies page at www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk  and apply by November 14. Following the online application, selected candidates will be invited to take part in online tests, attend an assessment centre and a final interview.
