Electricity investment shows commitment for the future

The final stage of an £11million project to improve the electricity network for thousands of customers in the Ely area is now under way.

From Press releases - 18 June 2014 12:00 AM

The final stage of an £11million project to improve the electricity network for thousands of customers in the Ely area is now under way.

UK Power Networks is laying about 13km of new underground electricity cable between Burwell and Soham, as well as installing new substation equipment.

The company is responsible for all the overhead power lines, underground electricity cables and substations which take electricity to the doors of about eight million customers in the East of England, London and the South East.

The latest £6million scheme is the culmination of seven years of investment by UK Power Networks in the Ely area.

With a growing electricity demand and an increase in homes and businesses being built in the area, the extra cables and new equipment will mean that UK Power Networks can ensure a reliable supply of electricity to its customers now and into the future.

By the end of the project, which is set to be completed by December 2015, an extra underground cable carrying 33,000 volts will have been laid and substation equipment replaced and upgraded, all of which will distribute electricity to about 15,000 customers.

In the five years up to 2015 the company will have invested about £500million a year in a rolling programme of improvement to its networks.

Colm O’Brien, project manager for UK Power Networks is responsible for the latest part of the project.

He said: “This seven-year scheme is vital to ensure that we maintain the reliability of electricity supplies to our customers in the future.

“With an ever-increasing demand for electricity as more homes and businesses are built in the towns and cities that we distribute power to, it is essential that UK Power Networks continues to invest in its network.

“Our continued investment shows our commitment to providing the best service to our customers that we can.”
