Power staff in Ipswich have been busy raising cash for a cancer centre where a much- loved colleague is being treated.

Customer services staff at UK Power Networks have raised about £1400 for the Woolverstone Wish charity which raises funds for the Woolverstone Wing at Ipswich Hospital.

Their colleague, Lesley Johnson, is currently being treated for lymphoma at the unit after she was diagnosed with the condition in November last year.

A dressdown day, cake sale, cake auction and a silent auction were held to raise as much money as possible.

Customer service adviser Shirley Mann is a close friend of Lesley and arranged the fund-raiser.

She said: “It went really well and I was really pleased. Everyone was more than willing to help out and lots of people gave donations before the fundraising even began. Everyone really enjoyed it.”

Lesley, who lives in Felixstowe, said she thought it was brilliant that her colleagues had decided to raise money for the unit. She recently raised £500 herself by holding a coffee morning with her sister.

Lesley said: “The unit does a brilliant job, I am very impressed with the care I am being given there.

“Lots of people raise money for the bigger charities but Woolverstone Wish benefits local people who suffer from many different cancers. The nurses and doctors do a great job and I was surprised at how many people are treated at the unit.”

Like Shirley, Lesley is a customer service adviser at UK Power Networks and is based at the company’s offices in Fore Hamlet.

The company is responsible for distributing electricity to the doors of about eight million customers across East Anglia, London and the South East, through its vast network of underground cables, overhead power lines and substations.
