A Suffolk charity which helps vulnerable people keep warm and well during winter has had a £10,000 boost from UK Power Networks.

The Warm Homes, Healthy People project, run by Suffolk Community Foundation has been given the grant from the UK Power Networks Power of Giving fund.

From a pot of £100,000 for the East of England, it offers funding of between £1,000 and £10,000 for community projects, particularly those which focus on improving the environment and saving energy.

The judging panel meets twice yearly and organisations are now being urged to apply before the next deadline of April 30.

Aimed at reducing winter deaths due to cold housing, the Warm Homes, Healthy People project provides a package of services to vulnerable, elderly, ill or those who are in financial difficulties.

Advice about fuel debt and energy saving are part of the services on offer as well as emergency fuel payments, temporary heating, fuel debt advice and emergency boiler repairs.

Suffolk Community Foundation’s Operations Director, Mandy Abdel-Aziz said: “We are thankful to UK Power Networks for their grant which has provided much needed support to some of the most vulnerable households across Suffolk to overcome the effects of cold homes, fuel poverty and ill health.”

UK Power Networks, which distributes electricity to about eight million homes and businesses in East Anglia, London and the South East of England launched the Power of Giving grants in 2013.

UK Power Networks Director’ of Customer Services, Matt Rudling said: “We are delighted to award this money.

“Community projects are so important, and require a lot of hard work and dedication from all those involved.

“The Power of Giving fund is our way of giving something back to the communities where we live and work.”
