The company, which delivers electricity to eight million customers across East Anglia, London and the South East, has given the club a much-needed £250 grant as part of its Team Sport Award programme.

It donated the money following an application from employee Stephen Bradley, who is head of the company’s major connections team and based in Potters Bar.

Stephen lives in Upminster and his three daughters play in the Colts section of the hockey club. He said: “The team is delighted to have received the award from UK Power Networks.

“The money is going towards buying new equipment for the youngsters in the Colts section – there will be new sticks for beginners, rebound nets, bibs, cones and balls.”

Upminster Hockey Club, which trains and plays most of its matches at Coopers Company and Coburn School in St Mary’s Lane, Upminster, was formed in 1896 and has men’s, women’s and children hockey teams.

The Team Sport Award scheme is designed to encourage staff to volunteer in, and support local communities, and promotes healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £13,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
