An engineer from Strood who works for UK Power Networks, the company that keeps the lights on across the South East, was today presented with the prestigious Long Service Award, at the annual Utility Week Stars Awards.

Ray Morris, who works as a maintenance engineer across north Kent, started his career in 1965 as an apprentice electrician with one of UK Power Network’s legacy companies. Described by his colleagues as being dedicated to serving to his local community, he was praised for his breadth of experience and enthusiasm that has led him to coach many engineers through their careers and help in their progression.

Speaking at the ceremony in Manchester today Ray said: “I am overwhelmed by this award and feel very lucky to have had such a great career. It really is an incredible feeling to be recognised in this way. Never could I have imagined, when I started as an apprentice all those years ago that I would be standing here collecting an award like this. I have been lucky enough to have had some great experiences doing a job that I love, but this is right up there with the best!

Ray has risen through the ranks to achieve the highest authorisation in his field, and 50 years on he is still maintaining the vital equipment which delivers power to homes and businesses across north Kent.

The Utility Week Stars Awards highlight the outstanding contribution that people working behind the scenes in the UK’s utilities make every day. The awards honour people who go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver vital services.

Utility Week Editor, Ellen Bennett, said: "Congratulations to all our winners. The Utility Week Stars Awards celebrate the dedication and commitment of front line staff who keep the lights on, the gas flowing and the taps running. The stories we hear of individuals and teams going above and beyond the call of duty are nothing short of amazing, and we're so pleased to take this opportunity to celebrate the unsung heroes of utilities."
