When Hertford RFC Under 14s rugby players go on a season-ending tour to France next year they will be sporting new tops, thanks to UK Power Networks.

The company, which delivers electricity to more than eight million customers across East Anglia, London and the South East through its vast infrastructure of overhead power lines, underground cables and substations, has given the club a much-needed £250 grant as part of its Team Sport Award programme.

It donated the money following an application from employee Lance Goodeve, a compliance advisor based in the firm’s Stevenage office, who has been part of the U14s coaching staff for nine years.

Lance said: “We are off to Lille in France on our annual tour next April and generally half the 45-strong squad go – and their dads.

“All the squad wear a ‘tour shirt’ for the whole weekend which allows easy recognition of club members and this grant will help pay towards the cost of the shirts.

“This £250 makes a lot of difference to clubs like Hertford RFC which are always in need of funds. Coaches put in a huge amount of work at such clubs and grants like this can only help make that work a little easier.”

The Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community and promotes healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year nearly £10,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
