Power firm gives boost to bowls club

Members of Flitwick Bowls Club are looking forward to starting the 2014 season in the spring with an improved green thanks to a £250 grant from electricity firm UK Power Networks.

Members of Flitwick Bowls Club are looking forward to starting the 2014 season in the spring with an improved green thanks to a £250 grant from electricity firm UK Power Networks.

The energy firm donated the money to the club to help finance reinforcing the edging around the green which had suffered from wear and tear over the years.  Employee Phil Timms had applied for the grant as part of the company’s Team Sport Award scheme.

Phil, a field engineer based at UK Power Networks’ offices in Luton, said:  “We are an active club in the local leagues with around 100 members, 30 of whom are ladies.  By improving the edges of the green in this way we can build on the successes of the 2013 season, one of the highlights of which was our Ladies’ Captain winning the Champion of Champions competition in the county.”

Although having only joined the club a little over a year ago Phil has become actively involved as a committee member and looking after the club’s online presence.

UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year nearly £10,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
