A petanque team near Folkestone is celebrating after scooping a £250 grant from UK Power Networks to improve their competition area.

David Taylor, an electricity linesman at the company for 51 years, nominated his village club for the Team Sport Award. The money will be used to create a better playing surface at Military Road recreation before the next French exchange visit this summer by Sandgatte Boules Club. It will be the fourth Anglo-French exchange visit between the teams.

David said: “The money will make a big difference because we want to improve the area where we play, known as the piste, to make it larger and put down a different surface to make it even better. We raised £600 from a December quiz evening as well.

“Boules is good fun and like any sport you want to win it. People stop and ask us what on earth is going on and we explain the game to them so they can join in and have a go.

“Anyone can play, it’s open to everyone in the community. My wife Trisha plays and our grandchildren have joined us a few times. We’re a cosmopolitan team with Italian, American, Welsh and northern Irish players. People bring food and drink, it’s a great atmosphere.”

Players stand still and throw hollow metal balls at a smaller ball called the ‘cochonnet’, which is the jack. The player or team that lands their boules closest to the jack wins.

Between April and September they meet on Tuesdays from 6-9pm, Thursdays from 6-8pm and Sundays from 11am-1pm. They are considering entering the Kent league, but at the moment they concentrate on playing friendly matches competitively with other villages in the area.
