UK Power Networks announces value for money and excellent reliability for customers

The UK’s biggest electricity distributor today released its Annual Review 2016/17 charting its best performance across many fronts, delivering excellent network reliability and greater value for money for 8.2 million homes and businesses across London, the South East and East of England.

In a year in which the energy landscape saw the pace of change rapidly accelerate, with electric vehicles and battery storage becoming increasingly mainstream, UK Power Networks revealed its vision to transform its network to a smart, flexible system that responds to customers’ needs.

Whilst aiming to be at the forefront of this change, this year’s Annual Review highlights outstanding performance across a number of areas, which translate into real benefits for its customers.

These include:

•  Cost: Customers pay 14% less than the average annual cost for distribution services, paying 22p per day for a reliable electricity supply

•  Network reliability: Customers also now only experience a power interruption once every two and a half years, an improvement of 40% in power cut performance since 2010. The amount of time customers are off supply during a power cut has also reduced by nearly 50% since 2010

•  Customer satisfaction: The improvements in the network have resulted in a satisfaction rating of 86% when surveyed by the regulator Ofgem

•  Safety: UK Power Networks leads the industry in its safety performance, with only five occasions in the year where its staff needed time off due to injury, the lowest rate in the industry and an 80% improvement since 2010

•  Investment: Over £500 million has been invested in the network last year and on average, the business invests 85% of cash generated from its operations, back into the network

•  Transparency and openness: UK Power Networks has set out for the first time the financial incentives received by the business for delivering improved service to customers, network reliability, and for its engagement with stakeholders. The network has also published data showing the gender breakdown of its staff and high levels of trade union membership.
