Electricity workers have built new play equipment for nursery children at Chatsworth Infant School in Sidcup.

This week children enjoyed their first use of the new climbing wall, nets, ropes and monkey bars, built on Thursday by five volunteers from UK Power Networks.

The challenge was organised by Jason Taylor, a senior project manager at the electricity company, whose children Fergus, five, and Freya, four, attend the Burnt Oak Lane school.

He said: “The children were playing in another area of the playground while we were working and were amazed watching it take shape. Hopefully they are excited to be playing on it this week.

“We enjoyed getting out of the office and doing something different from our usual jobs to help a local school. Our team worked hard and it was fantastic to have their support.”

The volunteers work in a mixture of roles at UK Power Networks, which owns and maintains the electricity network which keeps the lights on across London, the South East and East Anglia.

The Parents Association raised £1,500 for the equipment, but installing it would have cost the same again.

Roslin Owen, headteacher at Chatsworth Infant School, said: “We are grateful to UK Power Networks’ volunteers for installing our new nursery climbing frame. Jason and his team worked all day in the heat so that the equipment was safely and securely installed and the children have started using it this week.”

UK Power Networks staff have two days paid leave each year to volunteer or fundraise in their community. Last year they spent nearly 5,000 volunteering hours working with local charities and conservation groups, making 2015 the firm’s biggest year of volunteering.
