When submitting a design to us for approval please include the following information. If we don't have this information then we will not be able to process your submission.

Full postal address and postcode of the site

A site location map, with grid reference, outlining your site in relation to at least two streets or roads

Completed network, civil and electrical designs

Design to show cable depths and cross section along the cable routes

  • Where a substation is required, construction drawing to be included
  • The design is to include the plant layout as well as the small power and lighting
  • Are all the works being carried out by the principal ICP? If not; then details of those who are to carry out the works and the elements of that work need to be provided.
  • Protection settings or fuse sizes, Earthing Details
  • Substation Earthing details Hot or Cold site. (Drawing showing details to be supplied with submission) to comply with the UK Power Networks’ Earthing Construction Manual Section 3 (Secondary Construction Network Earthing Construction).
  • Service taken from LV main or Substation to comply with UK Power Networks’ Earthing Design Manual Section 06 (LV Network Earthing Design)
  • Your estimate of the new total 'After Diversity Power Requirements' (in kVA) for the site
  • Number of each type of premises by category – Retail/Office/Industrial/Domestic/Other Commercial
  • A breakdown of the proposed load to enable us to ascertain the load characteristics. If domestic – number of dwellings with gas heating and number of dwellings with electric heating – for electric the anticipated tariff type also (E7, E10, other)
  • For LV Designs: Details of the volt drop at the end of each LV main cable. Details of the highest loop impedance at a supply point on each LV main cable and at the end of each LV main cable. Short circuit current at each service. Start current of the largest lift or other motors including starter type and frequency of start & frequencies and magnitudes of the harmonic rejection currents (Thyristor soft start only).

Materials List should include:

  • UK Power Networks SAP Code
  • Manufacturers Model/Type reference or Drawing Numbers

Materials list should also include sundry items such as:

  • Rubber mat
  • Log book holder and log book.
  • Destination labels for the Ring Main Unit
  • Destination Labels for the LV Board or Cabinet

Health and Safety Plan

  • To include, all SHE requirements for accessing and working on the site.
  • To include, all special restrictions, such as contaminated ground and special precautions to be taken.
  • Legal Details
  • Project Name
  • Project information, Address and post code
  • Name and contact details of the land owner
  • Name and contact details of the Solicitor acting for the land owner.

Payment of design approval charge

Where an accredited ICP undertakes the contestable work, then subject to the terms and conditions of the 'Construction and Adoption Agreement' being satisfied, ownership of the new assets will be transferred to UK Power Networks. Our Construction and Adoption Agreement cover the 'conditions precedent' to be met by the customer, the customer's obligation, and UK Power Networks obligations.

A street lighting authority is able to appoint any accredited ICP to work on their behalf. The works are subject to the terms and conditions of the 'Agreement for the Carrying out of Connections to Street Furniture'. The draft agreements for Asset Owners (street lighting authorities) and Contractors (ICPs) may be accessed here:
