What is Electricity Storage?

Electricity Storage captures energy produced at one time for use at another.

It allows consumers to store electricity generated off peak for use at peak times when it is more valuable to the consumer or the network. It can also be a significant resource for renewable energy, allowing electricity generated when it is windy or when the sun is shining to be released on demand. It encompasses a range of technologies with different technical characteristics and specifications.

Leading the way on Electricity Storage

Grid-scale Electricity Storage
We are an industry leader in Electricity Storage and operate the UK’s first grid-scale Electricity Storage scheme. We were the first Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to publish an Engineering Design Standard (EDS 08-5010).

If you would like to find out more about grid-scale Electricity Storage, please download our final evaluation report of the Smarter Network Storage solution.

Small-scale Electricity Storage
We have just launched a new fast track process for small-scale Electricity Storage applications. The application will be evaluated online and provide customers with the permission to connect through the fast track process when the set technical criteria are met and a supply upgrade is not required.

If you would like to find out more about small-scale Electricity Storage and how it may be of benefit to you, please download our guide.

Are you planning to install Electricity Storage devices to our network?
If yes, please follow the interactive diagram below and you will be directed to the appropriate application form:

Are you planning to install Electricity Storage as a standalone system
or combined with another technology?

Size of your Electricity Storage unit within any single premises

Does your Electricity Storage unit (or the aggregation of Electricity Storage units, if there are more than one) have a capacity of 16A per phase or less, and is it connected at low voltage? In other words:

Three Phase – Electricity Storage capacity of 11.04kW or smaller and connected at 400V
Single Phase – Electricity Storage capacity of 3.68kW or smaller and connected at 230V
Size of your installation within any single premises

Is the combined installed capacity of both your Electricity Storage and generation 16A per phase or less, and is it connected at low voltage? In other words:

Three Phase – combined installed capacity of 11.04kW or smaller and connected at 400V
Single Phase – combined installed capacity of 3.68kW or smaller and connected at 230V
Number of premises

In how many premises are you planning to install within 500m of each other or with the same postcode (ignoring last two letters)?

Size

Is your Electricity Storage capacity either 50kW or less (Three Phase) or 17kW or less (Single Phase)?

Number of premises

In how many premises are you planning to install within 500m of each other or with the same postcode (ignoring last two letters)?

Size of each unit

Taking Electricity Storage and generation separately, is the individual capacity of each unit 16A per phase or less?

Your installation is eligible for the G83 Single premises connection process.

Your installation is eligible for the G83 Multiple premises connection process.
