Who we are

UK Power Networks is Britain’s largest power network, responsible for delivering electricity to more than eight million homes and businesses in London, the South East and the East of England.

We serve an area of 29,165 square kilometres, from The Wash in the East to the River Arun on the South Coast.

UK Power Networks is owned by the Cheung Kong group (CKG), which has extensive experience of operating regulated infrastructure operations around the world.

The group already operates electricity distribution businesses in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

CKI has been recognised as having leading customer service and health and safety systems. In the UK it owns 100% of Cambridge Water and has stakes in Southern Water and Northern Gas Networks.

What we do

UK Power Networks is a distribution company; we operate and maintain the networks that deliver electricity to you using 170,000 kilometres of underground cables and overhead lines, and more than 130,000 substations.

There are around 20 energy supply companies which buy electricity and gas in bulk from generation companies and sell it to anyone, anywhere in the UK.

You can choose which energy supply company to use regardless of where you live.

These companies pay distribution companies – like UK Power Networks – to transport it to your home and business.

UK Power Networks is also the UK’s biggest connections business, carrying out more than 130,000 new connections every year.

Our performance is monitored against a set of service standards developed by our regulator, Ofgem.

Our track record

The Networks business has been recognised by Ofgem as delivering the largest investment plan in the last five years.

The London Network is the best performing in terms of customer interruptions and the length of power cuts out of all the distribution companies in the UK.

We have cut the average time to bring people back on supply after strong winds by half since 2002.
