Safety around Power Lines, Substations and Underground Cables
Be safe, be informed....
We all use electricity every day.
It is so much a part of our lives that we do not always remember that it can be dangerous.
We know that some groups of people are more at risk of electrical accidents from pylons, overhead lines, substations, cables and poles than others. We promote safety by giving out leaflets, visiting premises and schools, offering safety talks and by serving on national safety committees.
We are determined to reduce public risk through raising awareness.
This site offers you safety advice and helpful hints across a range of leisure and work activities that may be carried out in the vicinity of the electricity distribution network.
- Substation Watch
-
Substations are danger zones. Every year, despite warnings, people are still killed or seriously injured after illegally entering them.
Substations are secure, protected structures where high voltage electricity is distributed from the National Grid (or local supply networks) and transformed down into more manageable voltage levels for homes and businesses. They can be found in urban and rural areas and are clearly marked with yellow warning signs. They are locked and protected for everyone's safety.
Only employees & persons authorised by us are allowed to enter substations, to inspect and maintain the equipment inside.
We are working with Neighbourhood Watch groups to help prevent vandalism and unauthorised entry, for the safety of our equipment and that of any potential intruders.
