I always try to take each day as it comes and be ready for the unexpected, but a meeting one day with an A-list actress at a residents’ association meeting did take me by surprise.

I’ve just been appointed as Worthing’s new BITC Business Connector. I’ll be working in the town for the next year to understand local issues and help you connect to a resource that may be able to assist.

Since June 2013 we’ve been using our Power of Giving fund to give something back to the community. The idea is to award grants totalling £300,000 a year to local groups that make a real difference in reducing fuel poverty, enhancing energy efficiency or promoting the low carbon economy.

We all rely on electricity - but rarely need to think about it. You just flick a switch and it’s there. However, very occasionally we may need to switch off the power because we’re doing planned work on our electricity equipment.

Today is National Women in Engineering Day, a day when the Women’s Engineering Society wants to highlight the great opportunities for women in engineering. I’ve been working as an engineer for more than 20 years and, while there are not that many of us around, it’s never made the slightest difference that I’m female and it is a great career to be in.
