Caring for customer roadshows

Posted on 24 July 2017 02:57 PM by Jenne1A

I took part in the first of a series of ‘Caring for Customers’ roadshows where we’re touring to promote our Priority Services Register. This was the first time we have tried anything like this so it was a bit of an experiment really, to see if it helped our customers to visit them and help them sign up to the register in person rather than having to phone us or go online.

We had four staff and the command vehicle –which we usually use for emergencies – right in the middle of Clacton town centre on October 26 - what started out as a very sunny day soon turned chilly with the biting sea breeze!

Met hundreds of shoppers and residents
We met hundreds of shoppers and residents to raise awareness of the Priority Services Register. It was a challenge getting people to stop, and we had to keep reminding people we don’t want to sell them anything! I think that is usually peoples’ first thought when they see an energy company.

For those of you who don’t know about it, the register is free to join and offers extra help to people who may be more at risk during power cuts. You can apply if you who rely on power for medical needs or feel vulnerable for other reasons such as having a young baby or a frail elderly relative in the house and I think it’s well worth it.

Over half a million customers have already signed up
Over recent years, our staff, local authorities and charity partners have helped us sign up over half a million people across East Anglia, London and the South East. But we think there are thousands more who could benefit from the additional services – hence the roadshows.

Despite the cold, people were happy to stop and chat and seemed genuinely surprised at the additional services we can offer our more vulnerable customers.  Even the local press turned up to see us!

The event was a great success with some people signing up on the day and others taking applications away to share with friends and family. You also can apply online, ring 0800 169 9970, or email

Coming to town near you
