UK Power Networks awarded a £250 grant to AFC Surbiton where one of their employees is a player.

Electricity troubleshooter, Kevin Abbott, who helps to keep power flowing in the area, applied for a grant to smarten up his team. He said: “It was brilliant to receive this award from UK Power Networks, which has got us the new tops. As we’re getting older everything gets bigger and the tops get a bit snug!

“We were wearing pink shirts with numbers falling off and frayed edges, so it’s good to get the new ones. I wasn’t expecting this at all and everyone was delighted.”

The team play five-a-side football on Tuesdays at Goals Tolworth, and matches are played in the Chessington and District Sunday Football League at Long Ditton Recreation Ground, Windmill Lane. Kevin plays in goal or defence.

Kevin added: “Playing football gives us a bit of release. It is nice to get out of the house and do something with friends, even though it’s frustrating when we lose. We missed out on a semi-final in March due to the pandemic.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sports opportunities. In 2020, more than 60 local sports teams connected to UK Power Networks’ staff benefited from a share in £15,500.
