Gillingham squad celebrate smart new kit

Boys at a Gillingham football club are celebrating a sport award for a smart new kit.

Players at Hempstead Valley Football Club were nominated by coach Danny Ervin for his employer UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award and received £250 towards a new away kit.

Danny joined the coaching team this season having helped the squad as a volunteer since his son Robbie, 11, started playing for the team about six years ago.

The cable jointer, who helps to keep local electricity supplies flowing, said: “The funding is a massive help. The club helps with some of the costs but most of the funding we need comes from outside the club, so the award makes a big difference.”

The team train at Vinall Park and play matches at Miers Court Primary School, in Gillingham.

Danny adds: “I played football as a boy so I know how important sport is for kids. They love it and it’s good for them. They make friends and it gives them focus.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sports opportunities. In 2020, more than 60 local sports teams connected to UK Power Networks’ staff benefited from a share in £15,500.
