Tom Stannard, who works for UK Power Networks, started the young team, who are part of FC Redwing, in 2016. He saw an offer at work about grants to sports teams and applied for one to get his young five-a-side team kitted out.

The control engineer, who works in Ipswich, and whose son plays for the Eagles, said the team is run by volunteers on a Saturday and previously the youngsters have had to borrow an old kit every time they play. Thanks to £250 from his employers the boys are now proudly kitted out in their new outfits.

“I think what UK Power Networks does with these awards is great, they are doing something for the community. I am really pleased and the boys were so excited, they kept asking when it was going to arrive.”

Tom said the boys were very happy to get their own kit and they had chosen the numbers they wanted. “One of the mums said he thinks he is a professional with a club kit that has a badge and number on it!”.

The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sport groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £15,750 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks’ staff.
