UK Power Networks has launched a search to find 15 bright young apprentices.

National Apprenticeship Week starts on Monday (March 14), and the company which delivers electricity supplies across London, the South East and East Anglia is stepping up its search to find the next generation of craftspeople which it will train to maintain, construct and repair its electricity networks.

Opportunities are available in Bury St Edmunds, Hemel Hempstead, Cambridge, Kings Lynn, Purfleet, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Falconwood, Brixton, West Ham and Camden. Each apprentice will specialise in one of three skilled trades working on either overhead power lines (linesperson), underground cables (jointers) or electricity substations (fitters), gaining nationally-recognised qualifications after a three year course.

Emma Barbour, a talent acquisition partner at UK Power Networks, said: “What we are looking for is people who have done their research, show a positive attitude and are genuinely interested in our work.

“You don’t have to be an expert in the field; it is our job to teach you all you need to know. However, when people apply to us saying they want to be a domestic electrician, for example, it shows they don’t quite understand what we do. My other advice to applicants is to check their grammar and spelling before submitting their application, make sure they answer all the questions and most importantly be themselves, so they’re relaxed throughout the process and do themselves justice.

“Our apprenticeship scheme is hard work and a positive attitude is more important than aptitude – we can teach aptitude, we can’t teach attitude.”

Anyone who thinks they have got what it takes to join UK Power Networks apprenticeship scheme has until the official closing date on May 15 to apply. After initial application, recruits face an online test, video interview, assessment centre and final interview with the area manager and a member of the HR team.

Apprentices carry out their formal training in Kent and Suffolk, coupled with on-the-job experience shadowing experienced staff, participating in a 24-hour standby rota and gaining a gradual introduction to field work. At the end of the programme, apprentices gain a Level 3 Trailblazer in Electrical Power Engineering.
