A world class dance group in Suffolk is celebrating a £250 windfall to buy mirrors for their dance studio.

CDC Street Dance received the money through UK Power Networks’ team sport award programme after being nominated by employee Stuart Ross.

Stuart, a dispatcher at the firm’s Ipswich offices, said the dance group has grown from four to 150 members in four years but did not have any mirrors to practice in front of at one of the venues where they meet, St Mary’s Church hall in Capel St Mary.

He said: “My daughter Millie-Paige was one of the first through the door when the dance club opened in 2011 and now the group is 150-strong and have qualified for the European finals in Glasgow and the world finals in Germany this year”

Sophie Dilworth, who set up and runs the dance group, said she was delighted with the grant, which has enabled the club to buy mirrors for the hall where they practice.

She said: “The mirrors are a great asset to our street dance school and will allow the dancers to be able improve on their footwork, overall look of the routine and see the way in which they are dancing,

“We are most grateful for our sports award and have high ambitions for our dancers at CDC.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is designed to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year nearly £10,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to staff at UK Power Networks, which delivers electricity to eight million customers across East Anglia, London and the South East through its vast infrastructure of overhead power lines, underground cables and substations.
