Growing a new energy market which will benefit consumers, the environment and industry, has won UK Power Networks a major award at the utility industry’s Oscars.

From Press releases - 10 February 2021 12:00 AM

The company won the Disruptor Award at the Utility Week Awards (February 8) for growing the energy flexibility market for a low carbon future, making it more economical to use more low carbon energy and transport it to the electricity network. Flexibility represents a fundamental shift in how electricity networks operate. In just three years the company has helped grow this market from nothing to more than 120MW, worth £14million.

During the pandemic the country’s biggest electricity distributor also delivered the best performance in its ten year history, and is getting its electricity network ready for 4.1m electric vehicles by 2030. Judges from across the industry said UK Power Networks had achieved changes which will unlock benefits for consumers.

Head of smart grid development Sotiris Georgiopoulos said: “This award is fantastic recognition for our Flexibility programme, which is a truly a game-changing development, helping to enable low carbon energy and transport at lowest cost for consumers.”

UK Power Networks had been shortlisted for six awards at the national event.
