Red Heathens Football Club was awarded a £250 grant in UK Power Networks’ team sport award scheme after being nominated by Sandra Norman, an employee at the firm.

Sandra, a network records manager for the company, volunteers her time at the football club where her partner referees and nephew is a player.

Sandra, who lives in Platt’s Heath, near Lenham, said: “It’s great to win this award because we also won the Ashford & District Sunday Football League Sherber Trophy last year, so it is a double celebration. The club will use the money to replace the nets, which are quite old and tatty and buy some training tops.

“Having this extra money will certainly make a difference. Instead of using the club’s money to buy nets we can spend that on something else. People invest a lot of their free time and effort in the club and they’re a good bunch of people. It’s a nice community club and they deserve the help. The club has a nice history - some sons have taken over from their dads in playing for the club.”

Red Heathens FC play every Sunday at Charing Heath Recreation Ground, off Church Hill, Charing Heath.

The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sport groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £15,750 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks’ staff.
