Ilford’s ‘magic lads’ conjure up cash for kit

Teenagers in Ilford are celebrating cash for a new team strip at Riverhawks Football Club.

The U14s side, which finished second in the league last season, are entering the new season with new kit thanks to a £250 Team Sport Award from UK Power Networks.

The local electricity provider donated the grant after Paul Edkins, a field staff superviser, nominated the 15 players saying they were ‘magic lads’ who deserved full support.

Paul, who volunteers as a coach with the club, said: “It makes a massive difference to the club. Amateur football is very tough and some kids struggle to pay the subscriptions. Anything that enables us to charge less money is vital because it keeps kids off the streets, encourages discipline and teamwork, keeps them in school and out of trouble.”

The team play at Clayhall Park on Saturdays and play matches on Sundays.

UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £18,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
