The UK’s biggest electricity distributor has been placed 9th in the list announced last night, and is celebrating making it into the top ten for the first time.

UK Power Networks employs more than 6,000 staff and keeps the lights on for 8.3 million homes and businesses across London, the East and South East of England.

The rankings are based on a staff survey on topics ranging from the support the company gives communities, to development and training opportunities. UK Power Networks earned its highest score yet in the survey, achieving a Two Star status for the first time and reflecting its strong emphasis on workplace engagement.

HR director Andrew Pace said: “We are hugely proud to once again be recognised as being among Britain’s best big companies to work for. Our vision is to consistently be the best performing network operator, backed up by a strong set of values.

“One of the ways we measure our progress is through the annual survey which helps us to listen to employees and act on their feedback. This year for example we have progressed several projects as a result of staff wanting to contribute to the UK’s cleaner air quality; adding electric vehicles to our company car list, replacing up to 100,000 plastic water bottles used during summer months with aluminium versions, and we have started a trial recycling plastic buckets that normally get sent to landfill.”
He added: “There is a well-established link between levels of employee engagement and high performing businesses. Our goal now is to continuously improve and keep this a great place to work.”

Jonathan Austin, founder and CEO of Best Companies, said: “I would like to congratulate UK Power Networks on their achievement of a Two Star Accreditation status and being named as one of the UK’s Best Companies to Work for. Best Companies have been producing the Accreditation standard since 2006 to acknowledge excellence in the workplace. We are proud that organisations like UK Power Networks focus on their employees and have been rewarded with an engaged workforce who tell us that they’re a best company to work for.”
