The company, which delivers electricity to eight million customers across London, the South East and East of England, has given the club a much-needed £250 grant as part of its Team Sport Award programme.

It donated the money following an application from employee Ben Shakespeare, who is a senior player at the club and helps coach younger players at a local school.

Ben said, “It felt amazing to win the award. There isn’t a great deal of funding for smaller clubs and this grant has helped us to improve the facilities at my club. Many of the club members were surprised UK Power Networks supports teams in the community in such a great way. We are always looking for new players of all ages, and the grant will help us accommodate bigger numbers.

“We used the grant to buy training supplies like balls and tackle pads, which has meant we can improve our training drills and hopefully win more games!.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is designed to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £15,500 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
