Safety elves welcome staff back

Forget Elf on a Shelf – now that Christmas is over ‘safety elves’ at UK Power Networks have been busy dispatching gifts from warehouse shelves to welcome staff back to work safely.

A team of ‘safety elves’ at the electricity company packed up over 7,000 safety magazines, 550 t-shirts and 30 high viz jackets to spread the word about ‘Stay Safe by choice, not chance’. Their colleagues will be receiving the extra kit when they return to work after the festive break.

Senior leaders within the company will also be donning high-viz jackets to greet staff at key offices and depots as they arrive at work from 7am on January 2.

Head of safety Peter Vujanic said: “We are proud to have the best safety record in the industry but we don’t want to get complacent. Essentially we are getting together with all our staff to help them refocus on safety, through a face-to-face briefing and by encouraging them to run through a checklist as they return to work.”

Safety is UK Power Networks’ top priority as many of the company’s skilled staff work with high voltage electricity cables, delivering power to 8.3million homes and businesses. Safety risks are also being highlighted for office-based staff including trips and falls, burns or scalds in kitchens, and driving-related incidents.  There were just two incidents in 2018, when an employee and a contractor needed time off work due to an injury sustained at work.

In 2018 the company’s StaySafe team won Team of the Year at the Utility Week Awards, and safety trainer Lee Perkins won Health and Safety Champion of the Year at the Utility Week Stars Awards.
