New Road Football Club was nominated for UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award by one of the parents, Ashley Temple, who works for the electricity network company and volunteers as a coach at the club.

He said: “I felt chuffed to win this award for the club. It’s a local community football team and we have to raise all our own funding for new equipment, so this award helps greatly.

“We’re a family club which gives boys and girls a chance to love the game, make new friends, build their confidence and improve their communication skills. They are not just learning football skills, they are learning life skills as well.”

The team trains on Saturday mornings at New Road, Sheerness, and matches take place on Sundays in the Medway Youth League. Ashley’s son Connor, who is eight, plays for the team.

UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award scheme encourages staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £18,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
