Two cancer charities are to benefit after an annual golf and fishing event organised raised more than £7,000.

More than 100 competitors took to the greens and fishing lake at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in Essex on Friday to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK and Breast Cancer UK.

The eighth annual event was attended by 140 staff from UK Power Networks – which delivers electricity to the East of England, London and the South East – contractors, together with their family and friends.

Area manager Stuart Varney, the charity committee chairman, said “We are really pleased that yet again so many people supported our charity fundraiser – and even the weather played ball and stayed dry.

“While we are still counting some of the money raised, it looks like we’ll be able to give the two charities about £3,500 each. Looking back we have managed to raise £90,000 for charity over the eight years which we’re really pleased about.”

James Beeby, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We would like to thank the staff at UK Power Networks for raising an incredible amount of money for Prostate Cancer UK. Currently one man an hour dies from prostate cancer in the UK – that’s 10,900 men a year. Based on current trends, if we ignore prostate cancer and do nothing, this number will rise to over 14,500 men a year by 2026. The money raised by UK Power Networks is helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments for men.”

Lynn Ladbrook, chief executive officer at Breast Cancer UK said: “Breast Cancer UK is immensely grateful to all the staff at UK Power Networks for this amazing donation.  The money means a huge amount to the charity.  Our supporters are the people that make change happen and this donation will mean we can reach more people with our prevention message and help prevent more people from developing this terrible disease.”

UK Power Networks staff are already busy organising next year’s fundraiser, which will be held at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club on July 14, 2017, and will be in aid of the prostate cancer charity Men United.
