Michael Horwood, who supports the club as the committee’s community adviser, nominated the squad for his employer, UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award scheme, to buy new sports equipment.

Michael, the company’s stakeholder engagement and public affairs manager for the electricity company, which keeps electricity supplies flowing across London, the South East and East of England, says the support from UK Power Networks has come at the perfect time.

“It’s fantastic to have won. Many sports clubs, particularly close contact sports have struggled this year as there have been no matches, and therefore membership subs have dropped, yet the clubs still have outgoings they have to fund,” said Michael.

“The club is struggling financially so this cash award means as we enter a new post-covid season, we can ensure we have the best kit and equipment.”

The team train on various evenings throughout the week depending on whether it’s the men’s, women’s or kids side. The diversity of the teams is a plus.

Michael added: “The club has brought together many local people who wanted to play and support grassroots rugby. As the club has developed, it now has a women’s team and kids’ team too and I look forward to further growth over the next few years.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sports opportunities. So far this year, more than 70 local sports teams connected to UK Power Networks’ staff have benefitted with the money awarded amounting to more than £15,000.
