<p>Sometimes we may need to enter your property, but don’t worry we’ll send you a letter before letting you know. This is because we may need to check a piece of equipment called a cut-out and a plug socket to make sure electricity is running safely into your property. This is called a ‘polarity check’. We will need to carry out a check in the morning, before we switch off the power and carry out another check when we turn the power back on.</p>

Will you need to enter my property?

<p>Our electricity network is designed in such a way that properties in the same street are often supplied by different electricity cables. This means that the electricity line that supplies your property could be faulty, but the line that supplies your neighbours property is fine.</p>

Why have I got a power cut, but my neighbour hasn’t?

<p>You may be concerned at this time about the food in your fridge and freezer. Food should keep for between 4-6 hours in the fridge and 15-24 hours in the freezer if you can avoid opening it.</p>

How long will the food last in my fridge and freezer without power?

<p>We can offer extra assistance to those who need it. How do I sign up to your Priority Services Register?

<p>We can restore some power supplies on our high voltage network by remote control from our office, but many other sites need to be individually visited and assessed by our engineers before replacement equipment can be ordered and repair work can then start.</p>

How do you get my power back on during a power cut?

<li>Keep a torch with spare batteries. We don’t recommend using candles but if you choose to please take extra care</li>
<li>Keep a mobile phone fully charged, and also a portable power bank if possible</li>
<li>It's especially important if you are unwell, less mobile or very young to keep warm. Dress warmly with layers, a hat and gloves and have blankets to hand, so you can keep warm until the power is back on. You can also reduce the heat loss by closing doors on unused rooms and closing your curtains.</li>
</ul>

Our advice to prepare for a power cut

<p>When you have invested a lot of time and money in fish and equipment we want to help you look after them during a power cut. Here are some tips:</p>
<ul>
<li>During a power cut the temperature of the water in your tank will drop gradually. This speed depends on the surrounding temperature and the volume of water inside the tank, i.e. a larger volume of water will take longer to cool down than a smaller volume of water</li>
<li>For insulation, wrap the tank in blankets. If possible, fill hot water bottles with warm water and place them around the outside of the tank</li>
<li>Without power, the water will lose oxygen gradually. So fish suppliers recommend a cheap bubble-up filter that can run off a battery-powered air pump. If you don’t have one then a normal bicycle pump will do the job</li>
<li>Fish suppliers recommend disturbing the water surface for five minutes each hour during a power cut. A good way is to fill a jug with tank water then pour it back in, making as much movement as possible</li>
</ul>

How do I look after my tropical fish during a power cut?

<p>If your mobile phone is running low on battery then here are a few tips to extend your battery life.</p>

<li>Use the extra power saving mode if you have it</li>
<li>Cut apps running in the background</li>
<li>Turn down screen brightness</li>
<li>Top up your battery in your car if you have a car charger</li>
</ol>

My mobile phone battery is low. How do I reserve my battery?

<p>Solar panels, or photovoltaic panels, are designed to collect sunlight and turn it into energy. Although they don't rely on the electricity network, if there's a power cut, solar panels will stop operating for safety.</p>

What happens to my solar panels during a power cut?

<p>Using a generator isn't always the simplest solution. We need the same qualified engineers to install a generator as we do to fix a fault and we would rather permanently fix the problem. We may sometimes use generators to restore power, but this will only be where repairs are extensive and they are going to take a long time.</p>

Why can’t you give me a generator?

<p>We usually provide generators for customers who are medically dependent on electricity. However, we recognise that there may be other situations where a generator is required. For example weddings or funerals.</p>

Why did my neighbour get a generator and I didn't? 

<p>We follow standards set by the industry regulator Ofgem. Extra support to those who need it during this weather

<p>We aim to connect most customer supplies remotely from our control centre to get power back on as swiftly as possible. Many faults will need our engineers to drive to site to locate, excavate and repair a fault. Road conditions make travel more difficult for our engineers across the East and South East, slowing down our access to repairs, often in remote rural areas. Our teams use 4x4s to reach overhead power lines, underground cables and electricity substations across challenging terrain and in severe weather conditions.</p>

Why can't you get my power back on quicker?

<p>Our engineers are based out on the road and work from job to job, restoring power supplies as quickly and safely as possible. Where possible they prioritise the incidents where we know the largest number of customers are affected.</p>

How do you prioritise who gets their power back first?

<p>We worked very closely with the Met Office before the storm and put in robust plans to minimise the disruption you may experience from a storm of this scale.</p>

<p><strong>By making this application you understand and agree to the Terms and Conditions that:</strong></p>

<li>You must install and operate the electricity storage and generation units exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1;</li>
<li>If UK Power Networks has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed or are being operated otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1 it may de-energise the connection and require that witness tests are undertaken in its presence and/or that the customer undertakes such remedial works as it shall deem appropriate; and</li>
<li>The customer shall bear its own and UK Power Networks’ costs associated with any witness tests and / or remedial works that UK Power Networks may require to be carried out if it has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed, or are being operated, otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1.</li>

<p>Please be aware that you are required to provide the commissioning sheets on the day after the planned commissioning date. The contact details of the relevant team will be included in the confirmation email you will receive within 10 working days after submitting the application.</p>
