Be winter ready

With winter now upon us, we've put together some of our top tips to help you be prepared for any unplanned power cuts.

Storms and extreme weather can sometimes damage power lines and cause power cuts.

We run a tree trimming programme to regularly trim trees and keep branches away from overhead power lines. We invest millions each year to maintain and upgrade the electricity network. However, power cuts can still happen.

If you experience a power cut, don't worry - our teams will work as quickly and safely as possible to restore your power.

There are also some practical steps you can take to prepare for power cuts to make it easier for you, especially before winter, or at any time.

Our top tips

  • Stay charged up

Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged. If you have a rechargeable power bank, keep it handy.

  • Stay in the loop

Check and track updates about your power by visiting our website.

  • Keep us on speed dial

Save our freephone number 0800 31 63 105 or 105 – it's your direct line to us during a power cut.

  • Priority Service Register

If you or someone you know requires extra support during a power cut, sign up to our Priority Service Register for free.

  • Check medical equipment

If you use medical equipment, make sure it has a battery backup or a manual function. If in doubt, speak to your healthcare professional or equipment manufacturer.

  • Keep your fridge freezer cool

Fridges and freezers can stay cold for hours without power. Keep the door closed to preserve the chill.

  • Keep a torch handy

Check that your torch is in working order and has spare batteries. Take extra care if you use candles.

  • Layer up

Wear extra layers or use blankets to keep you warm during a power cut.

  • Look out for each other

Check in on neighbours in vulnerable circumstances. If they need help, don't hesitate to call us on 105.
