Children and teachers Power Up! for the new term

Thousands of schoolchildren will learn how electricity works and how they can stay safe thanks to a relaunched website with new interactive games from the country’s largest electricity distributor in time for the new school year.

The newly updated and refreshed website Power Up! Is aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 in primary schools and up to 14-year-olds in secondary schools with lessons to run alongside the National Curriculum, launched by UK Power Networks.

The energy distributor has packed the site with information and fun games as well as teaching resources for teachers and parents. There are interactive worksheets, lesson plans, downloadable resources and videos to support children learning in the classroom or at home.

Two new interactive games have been added to help them explore the dangers and benefits of electricity. Already 11,000 children this year have played a game that builds an electrical circuit, and now a crossword and different levels of wordsearches have been added as supportive material for teachers.

One parent who explored the site with her daughter said: “My 10-year-old tested the wordsearch and hard crossword on Power Up! and found them so good – she wanted more!  She whizzed through the wordsearch, didn’t get ‘generator’ and ‘renewables’ on the crossword - so she learned about those words.”

“We really look forward to hearing what teachers and parents think about the site and will be looking at ways to develop it so it remains fresh and exciting,” said Clorise Duporte, education and engagement advisor for UK Power Networks.

The company’s Public Safety team regularly visit schools and attend education events to pass on the safety message to schoolchildren.
