Top industry award for power apprenticeship

The specialist training schools where UK Power Networks’ apprentices learn to ‘keep the lights on’ have gained a top industry award.

Britain’s biggest electricity distributor earned the Training Provision of the Year Award at the Energy & Utility Skills Awards in Birmingham for nurturing an outstanding pipeline of talent, that keeps apprentices’ welfare at the heart of training.

The event brought together industry leaders, experts, and key stakeholders to address the critical challenges and opportunities in the energy and utilities sector and celebrated the outstanding individuals and organisations shaping the future of the industry.

Energy & Utility Skills external judges praised the submission. They said: “UK Power Networks’ training provision is a wonderful example of the importance of tailoring training to the individual, responding to current trends and placing apprentices’ welfare at the heart of our approach. This submission has also provided fantastic evidence showing the positive impact they have had on both the apprentices and the business.”

Personal development is taken seriously, safeguarding the 83 apprentices currently training as jointers, fitters or linespeople on the Power Networks Craftsperson Apprenticeships. All training managers have top Best Companies ratings, train in neurodiversity awareness and are empowered to support the practical and emotional welfare of the apprentices.

They can access tailored support from highly-trained staff across the training centres at Sundridge in Kent, Frant in East Sussex and two Suffolk centres at Risby and Bury St Edmunds. Apprentices have opportunities to participate in volunteer days, Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold expeditions, STEM events, Outward Bound adventures and safety education events in their local communities, building teamwork and responsibility.

Roger Waring, director of commercial services at UK Power Networks, said: “We were up against some tough competition so our team were thrilled to win this award which reflects the dedication of our trainers and support staff, talent of our apprentices and our focus on pastoral care which stems from our vision to be an employer of choice.

“Apprentices are essential for our workforce resilience plans and our training provision continues to evolve to meet their emerging needs. We invest in an enriched, inclusive training programme that extends beyond the obligatory core skills and knowledge needed for a qualification. This gives our apprentices the best chance of success.”
