Treble triumph for power apprenticeship at Government awards

UK Power Networks has won a third prestigious award from the Department for Education for exceptional dedication as an apprenticeship employer.

The company was Highly Commended for QA Large Apprenticeship Employer of the Year at the National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards 2024, hosted by journalist and presenter Steph McGovern.

The team qualified for London’s grand final as regional winners for Large Apprenticeship Employer of the Year (South East), and the company also won Social Justice Employer of the Year in London.

The firm which delivers electricity across London, the South East and East of England, competed among more than 1,300 entries from sectors including construction, health, IT, science, digital and public sector, including Amazon and Jet2.com in its category. Winners were recognised for best practice across recruitment, training practices, diversity and progression.

The awards shine a spotlight on excellent training received by electricity cable jointers, substation fitters, and overhead linespeople who prepare to maintain the electricity network that delivers safe, reliable supplies to over a quarter of the UK’s population.

UK Power Networks employed 53 new craft apprentices this year alone on Power Networks Craftsperson (Level 3) Apprenticeships. School leavers undergo training in three years, while career changers can qualify in two years. They receive practical training across four dedicated training schools in Sundridge and Frant in Kent and Bury St Edmunds and Risby in Suffolk, with a strong emphasis on pastoral care and tailored support.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “UK Power Networks was recognised by the judges for their commitment to apprenticeships through significant investment, clear progression plans, inclusive practices, exceptional retention rates, and comprehensive support focused on both personal and professional development.”

Sharon Webb, training delivery manager at UK Power Networks, said: “We are thrilled to be highly commended because it reflects our commitment to developing high-quality apprenticeships, and a really supportive learning environment that continues to evolve.

“We will keep striving for excellence in the way we recruit, train and develop apprentices. They help us deliver an essential service keeping safe and reliable power supplies flowing to our local communities. We also want to thank all our dedicated employees for the way they support the development of our apprentices.”

Apprenticeships provide the opportunity to earn while learning valuable skills across a wide array of sectors. The government’s “Skills for Life” campaign promotes apprenticeships and T Level options to young people, adults, and employers.
