Electricity Guaranteed Standards (EGS)

What are the Electricity Guaranteed Standards (EGS)?

We want to give you a safe and reliable supply but sometimes things can go wrong. For example, contractors working on other services damage our underground cables or severe weather conditions cause damage to our overhead lines.

Our industry regulator, Ofgem, sets the guaranteed standards that apply to individual customers and involve penalty payments if we do not meet set guidelines.

Certain circumstances may mean the standards do not apply. For some of these Ofgem has agreed alternative arrangements, such as storm payments. Conditions apply to most standards.

Is compensation payable during roadworks?

UK Power Networks has a statutory obligation to maintain, upgrade and provide connections to the electricity distribution network so that all homes and businesses have power.

While we are unable to offer business compensation during roadworks, we plan them with relevant local authorities, work hard to keep the impact to a minimum, and keep residents informed.

We operate to Guaranteed Standards set by our regulator, Ofgem, which state the level of payments that can be made to customers and the circumstances in which these would apply. There are no Guaranteed Standards for electricity distributors that apply specifically for roadworks.
