£18m resiliency boost to North London area

Homes across North London will soon see the benefits of an £18million electricity investment from UK Power Networks, which will also bring more diverse green spaces.

The company, which delivers energy to homes and businesses across London, the East and South East of the UK, will upgrade four cable circuits and provide 51MVA extra capacity to local areas – serving more than 30,000 homes from two substations in Exeter Road (Waltham Forest) and Hackney.

With the increase in demand for Low Carbon Technologies such as electric vehicles and electric heat pumps, UK Power Networks is working hard to help the transition to Net Zero in areas like Hackney and Walthamstow.

The company used a horizontal directional drill for cable laying, in a bid to minimise disruption to the ground and surrounding wildlife.

Part of the work took place in Lee Valley Regional Park, a very biodiverse part of London, home to woodland, wetlands and various types of environments.

At Leyton Marsh, the UK Power Networks London team has gone above and beyond to support sustainability efforts in the area. In 2022, 15 staff members volunteered to weed pennywort from an oxbow lake located on the River Lea, to improve oxygen levels and encourage diverse environments.

Last year, UK Power Networks also made a £10,000 donation to the Hackney Parks team to turn a bleak concrete façade into an eye-catching mural that all park users can enjoy.

During its works this year on Leyton Marsh, the UK Power Networks team worked hard in their reinstatement process, by sewing a wildflower mix to their area of works to encourage biodiversity development in the area.
