Aylesford Rockets take off with new power grant

Aylesford Rockets fortunes have taken off, with a £250 grant towards new team kit.

The under-8s Rockets at Aylesford Football Club were awarded a Team Sport Award by local power distributor, UK Power Networks, to help replace shorts and tops the team is fast out-growing.

Connections coordinator, Miranda Rayment, secured the funds from her employer UK Power Networks after the club lost their sponsor at the start of the season. Her husband David Rayment coaches the boys and son Hudson, seven, is a defender for the team.

Miranda said: “This is a massive boost to get the boys new kit that they are fast growing out of. It’s brilliant news and a huge development.

“The manager couldn’t believe it because we have tried for months to get a new sponsor. He was over the moon and the boys are elated. They were really looking forward to getting new clothes because they are growing out of them fast.”

The team train on Wednesdays at Holcombe Hockey Club, Chatham, and play home matches Saturdays in Maidstone Invicta Primary League at Aylesford Football Club, Forstal Road.

Ric Jarvis, from Aylesford Football Club, said: “As a self-funding team, we are tirelessly fundraising to allow the children to train weekly, pay for referees on match days, and provide the team with much needed training equipment, such as balls and cones.

“As we are using a second-hand football kit, UK Power Networks’ generous donation will help towards the purchase of a new kit, as the children have outgrown their current kit, which is over two years old. We thank UK Power Networks for its generosity, it really does make a big difference to a small team, which we are truly grateful for.”

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Awards since the scheme was set up. Last year alone, 86 teams benefited from a share in £21,500. The awards encourage staff to volunteer in the community, support grassroots sport, promote healthy living, teamwork and develop sports opportunities.
