Bright new start for Ashford girls

Girls at a new football team in Ashford are celebrating a sports grant for their first team kit

UK Power Networks awarded Ashford United Football Club under-12s squad a £250 Team Sport Award for new team strip. The girls were nominated by Adam Fisher, a lead design engineer at the local electricity firm, whose daughter Tillie, 10, plays in the team.

Adam, one of the team’s trainers, said: “We were very happy to receive the award and being a new team, we need everything from bibs, cones and footballs to kit. You name it, we need it.

“The girls haven’t played full matches yet, but they have played in tournaments, mainly against boys, and although they lost they loved it and came off the pitch smiling. All the coaches congratulated them on their attitude, for always trying, which gave them a confidence boost.

“We live in a remote area so it’s nice they can meet friends in a safe environment. A lot of the training is based around conversations with others and working as a team, which will support their transition to secondary school and throughout life.”

The team trains on Tuesday at Ashford United Football Club’s Homelands Stadium in Ashford Road, Kingsnorth, and on Thursday at Bethersden Primary School, under floodlights. The girls are establishing the team by playing friendly matches, before joining a league.

The Team Sport Award scheme encourages UK Power Networks staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. During 2021, 77 teams benefited from a share in £19,250.
