Celebrating UK Power Networks' Success at Utility Week Live Flex Awards
We are delighted to announce that UK Power Networks has achieved remarkable recognition at the inaugural Utility Week Live Flex Awards, winning both the prestigious Flexibility Pioneer of the Year and Network of the Year awards.
These accolades underscore our commitment to innovation and excellence in delivering a smarter, more flexible energy network.
Network of the Year: UK Power Networks' Distribution System Operator (DSO) has demonstrated a pioneering approach to energy flexibility, proving its technical and commercial viability. Currently, 30% of our network needs are met through flexibility, translating into £85 million in customer benefits through avoided network reinforcement in 2023/24 alone. Our twice-yearly flexibility tenders with the lowest participation threshold in the industry allow us to support hundreds of substations and serve hundreds of thousands of customers, ensuring timely connections for electric vehicles (EVs) and heat pumps. By constantly iterating our products and processes, and focusing on growing the market, simplifying processes, and coordinating with other markets, we are setting the standard for flexibility in the energy sector. In a competitive category alongside National Grid Electricity Distribution and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, it’s great to see us stand out in this category.
Flexibility Pioneer of the Year: Sotiris Georgiopoulos, Head of UK Power Networks’ DSO, has been instrumental in transforming our approach to network management. Since joining as a graduate engineer in 2005, Sotiris has led numerous groundbreaking initiatives, including the Flexible Connections programme and the establishment of the UK's first standalone smart grid development team. Under his leadership, the DSO has launched the UK's first independent Distribution System Operator and introduced industry-first products like the day-ahead flexibility market. Sotiris' innovative vision and dedication to driving collaboration have not only benefited our customers but have also set new standards for the entire industry. Likewise, Sotiris was up against other credible pioneers from both Electron and Local Energy Markets Alliance but stood out due to his committed to help others with their development and his contributions at the highest levels.
