Churchyard clear up reveals graves
A group of power workers spent a day uncovering gravestones, making churchyard paths safer and creating a clear view of a Hertford Church.
The design engineers from UK Power Networks in Borehamwood and St Neots were pruning and pulling up masses of vegetation at All Saints Church in Queens Road.
Abby Cardall visited the church and wondered if they would appreciate help clearing some of the undergrowth in the churchyard.
The nine-strong team carried out the work using their company’s Donate a Day scheme which gives the 5,500 staff two paid days each year to volunteer in their local communities.
As they pulled back large amounts of overgrown ivy they uncovered two large headstones. They also cut back trees where branches were overhanging paths making it difficult for churchgoers with visual impairment.
Abby said: “It was a very rewarding day, straight away you could see the difference we had made in the churchyard. We even had some passers-by telling us what a great job we were doing and how grateful they were”.
So far this year more than 350 UK Power Networks employees have completed volunteering time under the Donate a Day scheme.
