Family home transformed by power workers

From building bunk beds to tidying every corner, a dedicated team has transformed a Felixstowe family home.

UK Power Networks employees from Ipswich rolled up their sleeves with the charity Dora Brown to get the house back in order and clear away clutter. The company gives staff two paid days a year to volunteer in the community.

Team leader Laura Sharpe said: “Our main job was to help a family get their home back in order after things had gotten a bit overwhelming. We rolled up our sleeves and cleaned, tidied, and organised every corner of the house.

“Dora Brown provided the family with brand new beds, mattresses, bedding, and drawers, making the place feel fresh and comfortable again. We all had a great time, found the day really rewarding, and can’t wait for another chance to work with Dora Brown to help in the community.”

The charity transforms Ipswich, Felixstowe and Woodbridge homes and lives for families with children, free of charge after receiving referrals from support organisations including social workers and schools.

Emily Cotton from Dora Brown said: “The volunteers worked hard and it is nice to see a busy company like UK Power Networks taking time to support local communities. The homes we work in have declined due to many different factors, including mental and physical health challenges, poverty, life events such as bereavements, break ups and job losses. The state of the home leads to further mental health decline, overwhelm, shame and low confidence. It also impacts on physical health - affecting sleep, hygiene, and diet. Last year we delivered 69 shifts to help 33 families - 47 adults and 69 children are living in safer, cosier homes.”

UK Power Networks also runs a Priority Services Register offering free extra help for vulnerable customers who need extra help during a power cut. You can sign up here: www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/psr
