Faversham golfers land a sports grant

A Faversham golf team landed a grant for new season competition kit from a local power firm, after their ascent in the East Kent League.

Ben Lane, who plays at Boughton Golf Club, secured a £300 Team Sport Award from UK Power Networks for matching team shirts to compete in the East Kent League.

UK Power Networks’ awards encourage staff to volunteer in the community, support grassroots sport, promote healthy living, teamwork and develop sports opportunities.

The field engineer said: “The grant is going towards additional team shirts due to the growing interest the club has generated over the last couple of years.

“With our increasing membership, this will fund additional team tops, so we are all in the same kit to engage the team and spur them on. It was great to receive the Team Sport Award and the team is very appreciative. Any funding helps so they were delighted.”

Boughton Golf Club was promoted last year to division two in East Kent League, which comprises approximately 18 golf clubs. The team compete on Saturdays between March and October, including at their home course at Brickfield Lane, Boughton-under-Blean, near Faversham.

Warrick Mitton, team captain, said: “We were surprised and delighted to receive the sports grant from UK Power Networks towards new competition shirts. We have a strong team spirit and wearing the shirts is all part of uniting and motivating the team to perform at their best.”

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Awards since the scheme was set up. Last year alone, 86 teams benefited from a share in £21,500.
