Fresh new features win website international award
The fresh new look of UK Power Networks’ website has received plaudits after winning the Jury’s Choice Award at the Umbraco Codegarden event.
The international award was presented to design agency Tangent, for work on the new UK Power Networks website in the past year. The website came first across all categories in the Jury’s Choice Award.
Since the beginning of last year, UK Power Networks has introduced a streamlined and improved service for customers, where they can drop a ‘pin’ onto their location to get instant information, improved local maps, and other new functions to make life easier.
Customers affected by a power cut could previously search for their location by typing in their postcode. Now there are more options including, pin drop location search where users can drop a pin on a map and are then presented with a localised view of any incidents within approximately a five mile radius of their area.
The innovative design keeps users updated with the latest news headlines during a major incident such as a storm. UK Power Networks has also invested heavily in text message sign-up features, making its website more accessible for people with disabilities, and made the website easier to find on search engines.
Working with Umbraco, the redesign has already resulted in a 44% reduction in carbon emissions. The website now pre-renders pages from a Content Delivery Network (CDN), considerably reducing computer power and subsequent CO2 emissions per page request. The website can now also accommodate four times more users all logging on at the same time.
The Umbraco Awards at Codegarden 2023 was held in Odense Harbour, Denmark, featuring over 200 entries, celebrating the work of users of Umbraco, a global web platform provider.
Judges for the Jury’s Choice said of award: “The team at Tangent has demonstrated their expertise in building a website that not only meets user needs during critical moments, such as power outages, but also has a carbon-conscious approach resulting in impressive reductions in CO2 emissions.
“Their dedication and attention to detail in understanding user behavior has resulted in a user-friendly and efficient website. Their approach to utilising a well-crafted, composable setup is an excellent example of how to achieve a significant impact in reducing CO2 emissions.”
Alex Sturge, head of communications, media and engagement at UK Power Networks said: “Our new website highlights our ambition for first-class service at UK Power Networks. As a UK leader in customer service, we are always looking for new ways to improve the ways we help our customers and this brand-new website provides users with all the information they need at their fingertips, with a sleek and modern look.
“We’re thrilled to win the award, and would like to thank Tangent for their collaboration with us on this very innovative project.”
Andy Eva-Dale, technical director at Tangent, said: “It’s an honour to collaborate on a project that is both complex and rewarding with UK Power Networks. Harnessing the power of a composable, decoupled architecture through Umbraco has delivered a stunning new website which enjoys slashed carbon emissions, increased user capacity and halved page load speeds – to name just a few benefits. We’re grateful to Umbraco for recognising this mammoth undertaking and electing us winners in jury’s choice category at this year’s awards.”
