From phonics to fairytales, power staff enjoy free books
From phonics to fairytales, a new generation of booklovers are being encouraged to read thanks to a scheme by UK Power Networks.
The parents of young bookworms have been applying for free educational books and stories to help children learn, and this year 138 members of staff had up to £30 worth of free books each.
The month-long Buy a Book scheme began two years ago as part of World Book Day encouraging people to apply for books related to any studies.
Since then other employees have taken advantage of the annual scheme to help those learning to read, students taking GCSEs, A Levels or studying at university and staff members who are studying for a qualification or pleasure.
So far Buy a Book has purchased around £15,500 of books and this year the scheme has also proved helpful during the cost of living crisis.
Matthew Underwood, an engineer with UK Power Networks said: “Our son was very excited to see these books to help him prepare for school in September. What is even better is that that any mistakes he makes in learning to write, he can simply wipe the page clear and start again! This will help his confidence grow so much. He was very grateful and was excited to crack on straight away once they came out of the package!”
The news comes during Learning at Work Week when staff are joining in with a number of webinars, video learning and courses with the themes of Building an Inclusive Future, Going Digital and Harnessing Your Future.
